In this edition of the 🧭 Microsoft 365 Compass 🧭 newsletter, we're exploring a new Copilot in SharePoint capability that turns your files and lists into fully interactive dashboards, no Power BI license, no app building, and no code required.
What Are Copilot-Generated Dashboards?
When you ask Copilot to build a dashboard from a SharePoint file or list, it's not creating a Power BI report or a custom application. It's generating an HTML file, the same type of file a web page is made of. That file has everything baked in: the charts, the tables, the filters, and the KPIs. Open it in a browser and it's fully interactive from the start.
As of August 2026, these dashboards took a meaningful step forward. They're now live-linked to the underlying data. That means if someone updates a record in the source list or file, the dashboard reflects that change the next time you refresh it. You're no longer stuck exporting data and rebuilding a report every time something changes.
Building a Dashboard from a File
The simplest starting point is a single file. Say you have an Excel spreadsheet tracking IT help desk tickets. Open the file, click the floating Copilot icon, and prompt it directly:
"Build an interactive HTML dashboard from this file."
From there, describe how you want your data displayed. Copilot will produce a dashboard with visualizations like ticket volume by category, status breakdowns, and average resolution time, plus the full underlying list. It's worth noting the dashboard file gets dropped into your Documents library at the root level, so that's the first place to check once it's done.
Building a Dashboard from Multiple SharePoint Lists
This is where it gets interesting. Copilot can also build dashboards from SharePoint lists, and it can pull from more than one list at a time, even when those lists aren't formally related to each other.
In my demo, I used two separate lists: a Vendors list and an Invoices list. I gave Copilot this prompt:
"Using the Vendors and Invoices lists, build an interactive HTML dashboard showing the total outstanding amount by vendor, overdue invoices, and payment status breakdown by category."
Copilot was able to model the relationship between the two lists on its own, without me setting up a lookup column or any formal linkage first. The resulting dashboard included a header with total invoices, total amount, outstanding balance, and overdue count, along with a payment status breakdown by category and a filterable invoice list.
Seeing the Live Link in Action
To put the live-linking to the test, I edited a vendor record directly in the source list, changing an amount and updating a payment status. After clicking the dashboard's built-in refresh button, the numbers updated immediately to reflect the new data. No regenerating the dashboard, no re-running the prompt.
What You'll Need
- A Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat license (the premium Copilot license) in addition to your standard Microsoft 365 license
- Access to the SharePoint site hosting the source file or lists
Once the dashboard file is created, anyone with access to that SharePoint site can open and interact with it. No additional license is needed just to view it.

🧠 Final Thoughts
What stands out most to me here is how little setup this takes. I didn't build a relationship between my two lists, and Copilot figured it out anyway. The live-linking is the real unlock though, dashboards that go stale the moment you build them have always been the weak point of quick reporting tools, and this closes that gap without pushing you into Power BI.
