Huge Change Coming to Microsoft Teams: Unified Chat Menu
A significant change is coming to Microsoft Teams and my guess is that you are either going to love it or hate it. This change aims to transform how we navigate communications via Microsoft Teams chats and channels.
Whatâs Changing with Microsoft Teams Chats, Teams and Channels?
Microsoft is going to be reorganizing the app to consolidate all conversations in Microsoft Teams (chats, channel posts and even Teams) in one place. This means all your chats, teams, and channel communications will be housed in a single section (the existing Chat menu), which is designed to streamline workflows and improve navigation.
The aim of this change is to make it easier for users to manage and engage in conversations centrally versus having to click into different menus and screens in the app. Additionally, to make navigating your discussions eaiser, Microsoft will also be adding several quick filters in the new Chat menu including:
- Unread to quickly see all unread messages across channels and chats
- Chat to quickly see only your one-on-one and group chats
- Channels to quickly see only discussions being had via channel posts
- Meetings to help you quickly access meeting chats and records
- Muted to see those conversations that you've suppressed using the mute feature
- @Mentions to quickly drill down into conversations where you've been tagged with a mention

Better Organization Using Sections in Microsoft Teams
The one additional feature that was announced with this change is the ability for users to create their own custom sections. Custom sections allow users to group together channels from different teams, one-on-one or group chats, and/or meetings into sections that can be named. This allows you to group key spaces in the Teams app to meet your unique needs. It was noted that users will be able to create up to 50 custom sections and sections can have up to 50 different items (i.e. chats, channels, etc.).
Will I have to use the new Microsoft Teams Channel and Chat Experience?
In the launch announcement, Microsoft communicated that users will be able to choose whether they want to use the new chat and channel experience or keep the existing experience. Microsoft states that at launch a guided onboarding experience will allow users to opt in to the change or decline it and that your selection can be changed at any time through the Microsoft Teams settings (as outlined below).
When is the New Microsoft Teams Chat and Channel Experience Launching?
The new Microsoft Teams chat and channel experience is launching in public preview in November 2024 and is expected to be generally available in mid 2025.

Content Spotlight: Building Calculated Columns in SharePoint Lists
Did you know that you can use formulas in SharePoint Lists just like you would in Microsoft Excel? That's right, you can implement formulas in SharePoint Lists using "Calculated Columns". I recently published a snippet of the power of SharePoint List calculated columns over on my YouTube channel. In this clip, I demonstrate how you can build a nested IF statement with multiple conditions in a SharePoint List Calculated Column. Check it out below!
